This morning my games, keyboards had no sound. After searching for answers, I switched the side switch to "rotation lock" and was unable to un-mute the system sounds and restored the sound to my apps. However, the side switch does not unlock the rotation. When I go to settings- general- side switch to - mute, rotation is unlocked and mute is on, I increased the volume with the side switch and still no difference. I checked the notifications setting and it is on. After switching between mute and rotation lock, I restarted the ipad and still no change. Please help!

The function that isn't controlled via the switch on the right-hand side of the iPad above the volume control is set via the taskbar instead : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar.

I understand how to use the task bar. Here is the problem in steps.

1. no sound with apps

2. setting- general- use side switch to - lock rotation

3. double click home bar and side swipe to the left

4. un-mute and sound is restored.

5. problem now is I am unable to unlock rotation

6. settings-general - use side switch to - mute

7. rotation is unlocked and no sound.

8. checked volume

9. volume is fine

10. still no sound for apps, keyboards, alerts

11. called apple, they told me to do a system restore. no sound while restoring the system also

Is it working on any apps e.g. Music and Videos apps but not third-party apps or notification sounds ? If you do get sound in Music and Videos then have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.

Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

Thank you for reply King Penguin. Unfortunately that didn't work. My sound isn't working on my apps, music or videos. However when I have my headphones I can hear the sound. I have tried re-setting to factory settings and have shut off my iPad and done a restart. Do you have any other suggestions?

I would try plugging the headphones in and taking them out again a few times and see if the sound returns through the speaker. If that doesn't work, you may have to let an Apple Genius evaluate the device. You have restored the device to factory settings so I don't know how much more you can do on your own.

I had problems, too. They stopped when I changed the function of the toggle switch on the side from 'lock orientation' back to 'mute sound'.... Weird, but it worked for me.

Between my six year old son and me - we dropped our iPad this morning. Screen gone black. When I seek to restart screen goes 'grey'. Sometimes when I try this it flashes white for a split second. Help! Am based in E.Africa!

Search this discussion group for "red screen." It resulted from a drop. Several folks got the iPad to return to normal by slapping the back of the iPad, with increasing vigor. As long as you don't don't do it to excess, you seem to have nothing to lose by trying it.

I had the same problem today. Although I don't remember dropping it, the screen turned green and fuzzy. After several phone calls to the service and finding out that the warranty expired 15 days ago, I found the solution here!

I slapped it at the back and it fixed the problem... at least for now. Thanks for the advice!

Daughter dropped her ipad twenty minutes ago and screen was green/red and fuzzy. Spent 15 minutes Googling problem and found this thread - slapped back a few times and voila - a minute later screen back to normal!  Thank you so much the person who discovered this and posted the (unbelievable) solution.

You just saved me a trip to the Apple store for a new iPad, thank you! 3 not so hard taps and the red-green snow was gone! I didn't quite expect in this day of more advanced technology the axiom of if it don't work, "hit it" would still be sage advice....ok, perhaps not sage, but still. I'm just happy my iPad is working right again!

Apologies for the late reply.  I'm afraid that I don't have any other solution to your problem (short of having your iPad examined by experts), if the "slapping the back" remedy that I stumbled upon is not working a second time for your iPad. My iPad recently had some discoloration again, but the same remedy worked for me. I suspect that the damage sustained by our iPad after it was dropped a second time is now much worse. Sorry.

Thank you so much for this! For people like me who get easily impatient and had been tapping for a while, give it some rest first for around 2-3mins. Should be repaired afterwards. :)

WOW! great job - I almost cried when mine broke, and then I read your post, not it works!  AWESOME!  Question - has this fixed your problem for good (so far), or have you had additional problems with it?

Ok so far. No additional problems with the display.  Had to use the same slap-the-back remedy after my iPad display recently had some discoloration again.  But it (discoloration) was again due to poor handling, and not to some damage sustained from the first incident.

I just have to add my voice. I dropped my IPad 1 2 weeks ago and 3 days ago I got the red screen issue.  I Smack the back one time, the screen flickered and everything was back to normal.

Same here.  Dropped my iPad.  Panicked at first.  I then found this thread and slapped the back of the iPad a few time and it came good.  I'm going to be more careful with it from now on.

I just had the similar problem today, a very gentle TWIST ( do mean gentle, but enough). It seemed to have readjusted the ribons or circuitry to fix it. Im guessing the the thickness of the first gen ipads require a slap whereas the thinner more maliable ipad2 could endure an exremly gently twisting to adjustment.  Every case will be different, but this is what worked for me.
